Francis Marion Fender , 91, of Bay Springs, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Bay Springs Methodist Church. The Rev. John Wood will officiate.
He was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Adel, Ga. After graduating from high school in Adel, he joined his brothers in the construction industry. From 1937-1942, he was employed by Dunn Construction Co. in Birmingham, Ala. He was inducted into the United States Army July 4, 1942. After various training assignments in the United States, he left Jan. 18, 1944, for England. As a member of the 704th Ordinance Co., he was part of the allied force that invaded German-held Europe. He landed on Utah Beach June 7, 1944. Throughout the European Campaign, from France, through Luxembourg and into Germany, he performed vehicle recovery operations, often under enemy fire, that blocked the American advance.
After 18 months of overseas duty and more than three years in uniform, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army with the rank of technical sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the European Campaign Medal with five battle stars and the Army Good Conduct Medal. He returned to the construction industry and settled in the Bay Springs area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch F. and Mollie Bradford Fender ; first wife, Kate Alexander Fender ; four brothers; and six sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Jarvis Fender ; a daughter, Katherine Fender of Bay Springs; a sister, Myrla Churchill of Brunswick, Ga.; a stepson, Ronald Jarvis of Knoxville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Susan Jarvis Byrd of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepgrandchildren, Spenser Jarvis and Sarah Byrd, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. today, at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs, which is in charge of arrangements.
