EDNEYVILLE -- Authorities are investigating a fatal automobile accident that killed an Edneyville woman Saturday afternoon.
Myra Mize Slawek, 29, of Waters Road in Edneyville died around 4:30 p.m. Saturday following an automobile accident on Old Clear Creek Road.
N.C. Highway Patrolman Tony Osteen said Slawek was driving her beige 1987 Ford Bronco near the intersection of Old Clear Creek Road and Saint Paul's Road when she veered off the road.
Reports indicate Slawek overcorrected when trying to get back onto Old Clear Creek and the vehicle hit both a ditch and a tree near a residence before it flipped back on the road, landing on its top.
Passenger Jason Staton was taken to Pardee Hospital, where he was later treated and released for minor injuries. Slawek was pronounced dead at the scene.
Osteen estimated Slawek was going about 45 mph at the time of the crash. The speed limit along that section of Old Clear Creek is 50 mph. Osteen said the road was wet at the time of the accident but said the weather is not thought to have been a factor.
Osteen said a beer bottle and a wine bottle were found inside Slawek's vehicle at the time of the crash. Sunday afternoon he was awaiting the results of a toxicology report and said the investigation into the accident was ongoing.
Slawek was born in Johnson City, Tenn., and moved to the area when she was 3 years old. She graduated from Hendersonville High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She had previously worked for her family's business, Maitland Construction.
"She was a very gentle and loving person, very sweet mannered and just extremely beautiful," said her mother, Mary Ann Maitland. "I don't think she ever met anybody she didn't like."
Maitland also said Slawek was a loving mother to her two children, Christopher Jacob, 6, and Julia Anne, 4. Slawek is survived by her father, William Joseph Mize of Lake Charles, La.; her brother, William Joseph Mize Jr. of Atlanta; a half-brother, Matthew Mize; a half-sister, Megan Mize; grandparents Thelma Hawkins and Robert Mize of Knoxville, Tenn.; and ex-husband, Christopher Todd Slawek of Hendersonville.
A memorial service is scheduled Tuesday night with a funeral scheduled Wednesday. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
