STUDENT, 17, DIES AFTER CAR ROLLS
A Heritage High School student died Tuesday after a car accident Monday on Mentor Road, officials said.
Jason E. Pendley, 17, of West Woodbine Drive, died at 12:34 a.m. at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He was flown there by helicopter ambulance.
Jason, who would have been a senior next year, had just dropped a friend off and was going home at the time of the accident, according to his uncle, Randy Moon, of Cedartown, Ga.
Jason was driving a 1988 Ford Escort west on Mentor Road and had just negotiated a curve when he lost control of the vehicle and it left the road, according to a report filed by James B. Long, a Blount County deputy.
The car traveled more than 200 feet off the road and rolled several times before coming to rest in an upright position. The wreck occurred at 11:35 p.m. Monday, officials said.
Jason, who was wearing a seatbelt, was speeding Long's report indicates.
Jason, a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church, loved to fish, hunt and swim, his uncle said. He had a summer job at a steak restaurant in Alcoa.
"He loved his car," Moon said. "It was new to him." His uncle said Jason liked to tinker with the car.
Jason leaves his mother, Yolanda Pendley, of Maryville; his father, David Pendley, of Denver, Colo.; sister, Stephanie Hanover of Maryville; paternal grandparents, Floyd and Mabel Pendley of Maryville; and maternal grandparents, George and Dorothy McCroskey of Maryville.
