BATES, JOE PEELER - age 76, born on October 10, 1923 in Tellico Plains, Tenn. died April 9, 2000 at his home in Maryville. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tellico Plains, was a veteran of WWII and received the Purple Heart. He was retired from ALCOA with 42 years of service and was a member of the ALCOA 25 Year Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vannoy Cornwell Bates; parents, Robert & Mamie Sue Bates; sister, Helen Wear, and Bobbie Crowder. Survivors include daughters and sons in law, Sarah and Jackie Winters, of Maryville, Sandy and Samir Hakooz , of Cary, NC; daughter, Susie Young, of Madisonville; great grandchildren, Lisa and Rick Shepherd, Lori Millsaps, Jill and Brian Fugate, Jeff and Teresa Winters, Tami and Gibby Bates, Joe and Jason Hakooz ; great grandchildren, Laurn and Tyler Fugate, Mallory Winters, Lucas, Maria and Leah Vannoy Shepherd, Matthew Millsaps; sisters, Frances Bates Bluford, and Kathryn Bates; sisters in law, Lillian and Gene Blakenship, Maudie B. Alexander; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Monday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Bean officiating. Entombment services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens mausoleum. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Tellico Plains. McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville.
