Mary Gladys Bell age 101, of Louisville, passed away at her home on Wednesday, April 2, 2008. She is preceded in death by: parents, James L. & Hattie (McClanahan) Bell; sister, Gretchen (Bell) James; brothers, Herbert, Guy, Sidney, and Donald Bell. Ms. Bell attended high school at Friendsville Academy, and went on to earn a nursing degree from Fort Sanders School of Nursing in 1933. She was a registered nurse for more than 35 years; a member of the first medical staff at Oak Ridge during World War II; and later did private duty nursing for many years, primarily at Fort Sanders Hospital. Several of her colleagues and patients became lifelong friends. Ms. Bell was infinitely devoted to her family and friends, and nursed many of them in the final days of their lives. In addition to being a nurse, she was a very talented artist and a gifted horticulturalist. Ms. Bell was a member of Ballard's Chapel, later attended Beech Grove Baptist Church, and was a member of the Eastern Star and the Knoxville Nurses Association. Ms. Bell is survived by her nieces and nephews: Mary Ann (James) & Larry DeMarcus of Louisville, Herb & Helen (Greene) Bell of Alcoa, and Mary Lynn (Bell) & Mike LaMee of Jacksonville, FL; special cousins, Virginia (Bell) & Avery Palmer of Louisville; several grand nieces and nephews, cousins, close friends and neighbors. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to devoted care givers Dianna Seymour and Jeanette Lawson for all their love and support. Graveside service and interment will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Ballard's Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Kenny Armstrong officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to The New Blount County Animal Shelter c/o Blount County Courthouse.
