SEXTON, JAMES DAVID, PH.D - age 51, of Lenoir City, Tenn., passed away suddenly early Saturday morning, November 20, 1999, at his home in New Orleans, La. Dr . Sexton was a professor of Interdisciplinary Human Studies at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He had been a resident of New Orleans since 1981. A former chair of the Department of Special Education and Habilitative Services at the University of New Orleans, he received his doctoral degree in Child and Family Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He was president of the International Divisions for Early Childhood and was active in many state and national initiatives to enhance services and supports provided to young children with disabilities and their families. Dr . Sexton served as co-director of the Early Intervention Institute, taught students from a variety of disciplines, conducted research, and directed collaborative efforts with other universities. Dr . Sexton was widely renown for his scholarly publications and exceptional leadership qualities. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Dr . Sexton attended Lenoir City schools. A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving with the Army. Survivors: mother, Mary Nell Sexton of Lenoir City; father, James Earl Sexton of Morristown, Tenn.; sisters, Janice Thompson, Sherry Lively and husband, Tom, all of Lenoir City; brother, Robert Lynn Sexton of Lenoir City; nieces, Stephanie Lively, Brandi Watt; nephew, Lee Thompson III; aunts, Margaret Hill of Lenoir City, Irene Tucker of Calhoun, Ga. Also survived by many colleagues, students, and friends in Louisiana and at universities throughout the United States. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Friday followed by a celebration of his life at 8 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 1999, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lenoir City for graveside services. A memorial service will be held in New Orleans at a later date.
