April 16, 1920 - October 16, 2015
Johnnie Lee Currie, a resident of Sulphur, passed away on October 16, at the age of 95. He was born on April 16, 1920 to John Mitchell and Annie Clara (Martin) Currie in Scullin, Oklahoma. He graduated from Sulphur High School in 1938. He married Martie Chandler on January 16, 1942. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and spent time in California, Washington State, and Washington D.C. before returning to Wynnewood with his lovely wife to start a dairy business. At the time of his passing he was the oldest member of the First Baptist Church in Wynnewood.
Johnnie and Martie were long time members of the Wynnewood Round-Up Club and enjoyed parades, rodeos, and friends they made during this time. They had many great memories of trail rides and wagon trains that they participated in and helped organize. After they sold their dairy, Johnnie drove for the mobile library of Garvin County for several years while Martie went to school to be a nurse. They loved their grandchildren very much and introduced them to wagon trains and horseback riding at an early age.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife - Martie; his brother - Marvin; his two sisters - Elizabeth (Bessie) and Anna Lou; and his son in law - Jim Clary.
He is survived by his daughter - Gloria Clary of Lewisville, TX; his son and daughter in law - Johnnie Ray and Shirley Currie of Garland, TX; his son - Larry Currie of Sulphur, OK; his son and daughter in law - Ronnie and Dawn Currie of Norman, OK. His six grandchildren and spouses - Kevin Clary of Perth, Australia; Kelley and Clayton Gibson of Colleyville, TX; Jeff and Heather Currie of Allen, TX; Tim and Rocio Currie of San Marcos, TX; Sara Currie of Norman, OK; and David Currie of Bartlesville, OK. His six great grandchildren - Megan and Gavin Currie of Allen, TX; Hayley and Blake Gibson of Colleyville, TX; Chandler and Anapaulina Currie of San Marcos, TX as well as two sisters in law - Linda Bagnall of Wynnewood, OK and Ruth McElroy of Sulphur, OK; one brother in law - O.G. Chandler of Wynnewood, OK along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 21, 2015 at DeArman Funeral Home in Wynnewood, OK from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Services will be held on Saturday October 24, 2015 at 1:00 PM at DeArman Funeral Chapel in Wynnewood, OK with burial following at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, OK under the direction of DeArman Funeral Home of Wynnewood.
