Longtime Montesano resident Ralph Colvin Hyde , a skilled furniture craftsman, died Friday, May 6, 2005, in the Montesano Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 88.
Mr. Hyde was born May 23, 1916, in Sylva, N.C., to John and Sarah (DeLozier) Hyde . He attended school in Sylva, graduating from high school in 1934.
He then worked at the Champion Furniture Mill in North Carolina, becoming very skilled at making handcrafted furniture. He also made special knives for carving intricate designs in the wood.
In June of 1940, he married Virginia Collins in Georgia. They moved to Grays Harbor in 1948, and Mr. Hyde worked in sawmills. He retired in 1983 as a handyman/millwright from the Mary's River Lumber Co. in Montesano. His wife died in 1986.
He enjoyed designing and crafting his own furniture, country and bluegrass music, dancing, gardening and old cars.
He is survived by two sons, John and Steve, both of Montesano; two daughters, Joan Lofgren of Matlock and Barbara Cock of Clearwater, Fla.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Three brothers, Kenyan, Eugene and Claywell, and two sisters, Estelle and Mary Belle, all died previously.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, in the Wynooche Cemetery at Montesano.
