Joan Mobley (age 85) went to be with the Lord on her birthday, August 13, in Maryville, TN. She was born on August 13, 1931 in Livingston, TN to Cleo and Clema Hodges. She attended Cookeville High School where she played 4 years of basketball, was a cheerleader, and active in many clubs. While attending Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, she majored in Home Economics and met her future husband, Fred Mobley. They were married June 6, 1953. After their marriage, they lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and in 1967 moved to Newport, TN. In Newport, she attended First United Methodist Church and was active in Bible studies, teaching Sunday school, assisting with the youth group, and knitting prayer shawls. She was known as a passionate prayer warrior all her life and knew the Lord intimately. Joan’s laughter, smile, and joy, even in the midst of difficult circumstances, will be missed by all who knew her. She enjoyed numerous hobbies including oil painting, sewing, crafts, and knitting/crocheting. She also had a deep love for animals, and she would often purchase supplies and food for the local animal shelter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Clema Hodges, and her sister, Betty Hodges Brady. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Fred W. Mobley, Jr.; daughter Lee Ann Vinson and her husband Jim; son David Mobley and his wife Jane; two grandsons (Eric Vinson and Adam Mobley); three granddaughters (Sarah Mobley, Rebecca Mobley, and Lauren Vinson); two great grandsons (Weston Vinson and Kael Thorson); and two nieces (Beth Brady Merrill and Sally Brady). Receiving of friends will be Wednesday August 17 from 1 to 2 pm at Manes Funeral Home in Newport, TN. Celebration of life will begin at 2 pm followed by interment in Union Cemetery.
