John E. Mersch, 67, of 715 Monroe st., Evanston, assistant chief of the Evanston fire department, collapsed and died of heart attack yesterday while driving a car at the head of a fire prevention parade. He slumped over the wheel at McDaniel av. and Dempster st., in Evanston, and Chief William J. MacKenzie of the Glenview Naval Air station, who was riding with him, seized the wheel and brought the car to a stop. Mersch was pronounced dead by Dr. Walter Hynes. The parade was en route from Evanston to the naval air station for a fire prevention demonstration. Mersch had been a member of the fire department since Dec. 1, 1905. He leaves two sons, Capt. James Mersch of the Evanston fire department, and Robert, and a daughter, Mrs. Martha Warren. Services will be held at noon Saturday in St. Nicholas Catholic church, Evanston, with burial in St. Mary's cemetery, Techny. [S142] Newspaper Article, Chicago Tribune, 13 Oct 1950. John E.
