Dr. Euel John Ownby, age 91 of Wears Valley, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014. He was born in Elkmont, December 31, 1922 and attended schools in Sevier County. He was a World War II Veteran. A charter member of Valley View Baptist Church where he had held the office of deacon and taught Sunday School. Dr. Ownby began and held the position of principal at various schools in Sevier and Hamblen County early in his career. He held a Doctorate from the University of Tennessee. In 1961, he began his career at Milligan College in Elizabethton, Tn. He was a professor in the Education Department and a mentor to student teachers. Upon his retirement in 1986, he and his wife Eloise Ownby retired to Wears Valley where they enjoyed gardening.
Dr. Ownby was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ownby and son. Rick Ownby; parents Baus and Mittie Ownby; sisters, Eva Myers, Stella Clabo, and Mattie Pass.
His survivors include: Daughter and Son-in-law, Rebecca and Dave McCarty; Daughter-in-law: Patty Ownby; Grandchildren: Grant McCarty, Katy Johnson and husband John; Great Grandchildren: Evie Johnson; Sisters, Edna Hatcher, Agnus Hatcher, and Doris Weatherholt, numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends Tuesday at Valley View Baptist Church with service following. Interment will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Valley View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Camp Smoky or Valley View Cemetery Fund. The family would like to thank all of his loving caregivers Janna Creswell, Janine Roushay, Cindy Mack, Debbie Shafer, Daniel Seal and the staff of Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation Center for all of their assistance and support during this time.
