Jerry Hays, age 82 of Gatlinburg, passed away at U.T. Medical Center on Monday, February 19, 2018. As an active Deacon and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Gatlinburg for over 60 years, his love for his family and his firm belief in God were the cornerstones of strength and guidance by which he lived his life. Jerry will be remembered as a man of God who loved his family, and a devoted servant to his community and his church.
Jerry was an avid golfer and played most of the time at Gatlinburg Golf Course and competed for the club championship multiple times. As one of the most loyal Vol fans in Tennessee,he always attended as many games as he could, from men’s basketball, football, and Lady Vols basketball. He almost never missed a game.
Mr. Hays was elected six (6) times (1985, 1989, 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015) to serve as Commissioner of the City of Gatlinburg and was presently in his twenty-first year of service as Commissioner. During his Tenure on the Board of Commissioners, he served eight (8) years as Vice-Mayor and six (6) years as Mayor.
Jerry was instrumental in providing support and guidance to help accomplish some of the following notable achievements that were instrumental to Gatlinburg’s growth. A list of some of these important milestones in which Jerry was involved in planning, approval, and implementation are: construction of the Gatlinburg Convention Center; re-location and construction of new City Hall including Headquarters of Police and Fire Departments; several phases of undergrounding of utilities in Gatlinburg; major renovation and expansion of the Mills Conference Center; construction of $24 million project of Rocky Top Sports World; and retaining Arrowmont School of Arts presence in Gatlinburg.
He was a successful and respected businessman and was associated with Hays House Restaurant that was owned and operated by his parents.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Stella Hays.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Huff Hays; children, Sara Hays, Kendall Hays and wife Fatima, Rick Hays and wife Teresa, and Christy Headla and husband Larry; grandchildren, Kayla Bennett and husband A.J., Marcia Hopson, Ethan Hays, Jessi Hunter and husband Graham, Brittany Wilson and husband Mark, Christopher Berry, and Ian Berry; great-grandchildren, Thomas Bennett, Charlee and Kace Hunter, and Izzy Wilson; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either: First Baptist Church, Gatlinburg Youth Building Fund, 111 Oglewood Lane, Gatlinburg, TN 37738; or,
Sevier County Food Ministries, PO Box 6042 Sevierville, TN 37864.
The family will receive friends from 2-4:45 PM Sunday at First Baptist Church, Gatlinburg with funeral service to follow at 5 PM with Rev. Larry Burcham officiating.
