MCCAMMON , HILTON POE of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed from this life Wednesday morning March 19, 2008 at Park West Hospital in Knoxville. He overcame many health problems in the last several years, having recently been treated for squamous cell cancer. He was 78. Hilton was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Darwin and Mary Hilton McCammon ; his wife of 29 years, Willa Dene Davis McCammon ; brothers, Lincoln and Bill McCammon ; sister, Elizabeth Ann; sisters-in-law, Willie McCammon , Lillian McCammon ; beloved brother-in-law, Sam Ellis; sister-in-law, Mary Davis; brother-in-law, R.L. Davis and special friend Polly Hancock Kirkland. Hilton is survived by: his son, Greg McCammon of Dinwiddie, VA; daughter-in-law, Susan Borowski McCammon ; granddaughters, Taylor and Shannon who will miss their Tennessee Papa; daughter Sandra (Sandy) Oakes, of Indianapolis, IN; son-in-law, Daniel Oakes; and grandchildren, Dana, Cullen, and Nolan, who will miss their Papaw. Hilton is also survived by his brother, Sam McCammon and wife Trena, of Kodak; sister, Mirrell Ford and husband Henry, of Evansville, IN; sister, Lucy Ellis of Knoxville; brother, Ben McCammon and wife Betty McCammon , of Knoxville, sister-in-law Beatrice Sellers, sister-in-law Margaret Kidwell Davis, of Maryville, many nieces and nephews, and many close personal friends. Hilton was a 27 year veteran of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and retired as a Command Sergeant Major in 1978 from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. During his military career he spent time abroad to include two tours to Germany and participation in the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam (2 tours). He was awarded two Bronze Stars, one with a V device for Valor during his service in Vietnam. He was selected to attend, and graduated from, Class Number 1 of the United States Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was a 50 year member of The Grand Lodge of Kentucky 73, F.& A.M., Knoxville Scottish Rite, Kerbela Shrine Temple, West Knox Shrine Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star Areme Chapter 466. He was very active with the local Masters Lodge 244. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and is a life member of the 11th Armored Cavalry's Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia. Hilton was awarded the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky, the Honorable Ernie Fletcher. Visitation will take place Monday, March 24th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home, 5815 Western Avenue, Knoxville. A Masonic service will follow at 7:00 p.m., preceding a celebration of life service by Rev. Helen Shaw. Hilton will receive a military burial at National Cemetery, 939 Tyson St NW, Knoxville; on Tuesday, March 25th at 11:30 a.m. Friends and family are invited to gather at the home of his sister, Lucy Ellis, 1224 Tipton Station Rd, Knoxville after the burial service.
