Jessie E. Cates, 72, a lifelong resident of Sevier County passed away June 2. 2003 at Fort Sanders Sevier Nursing Home.
During her lifetime Jessie fulfilled many different positions at the First National Bank of Gatlinburg. She started her career with the bank in 1950 as the first bookkeeper and in November of 1959 Jessie was elected assistant cashier of the bank. The bank in 1963 in recognition of her talent named her as a Director and appointed her as Cashier. In 1978 she assumed the position Executive Vice President and stood as second-in- command at the bank. Because of her dedication to the bank and community she opened the door of the banking business to many of the women who have followed in her footsteps.
Her parents, Gaston E. and Cora Ogle Cates; brother, Charles "Buddy" Cates preceded Jessie in death.
Jessie is survived by her sister, Mary Ruth Cutshaw and the many friends and business associates whose lives she has touched during her stay on this earth. Many will remember her as a trailblazer for her contribution to the community and her chosen profession.
Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003 at Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens with Rev. Bobby Ely officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 in the Davis Room of Rawlings Funeral Home.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
