- James Miller "Madison" Ragan lived in Macoupin County, Illinois until the
migration to Phelps County, Missouri in the mid-1850s. Most of the family give
James' middle name as "Madison." The Watts Journal, (the original is housed in
the Western Historical Collection at The University of Missouri at Rolla)
corrected this to read as "James Miller Ragan."
James M. was listed with his parents in the 1840 and 1850 Federal Census of
Macoupin County, Illinois. In September 1856 he moved with them to Phelps
County, Missouri. He lived there until his marriage.
In 1870 he and his wife Susan J. were listed in the Federal Census of Macoupin
County, Illinois. There were three children and James' father in the
household: Jane, age 8; Marion, age 6; Elizabeth, age 3; and Joshua, age 66.
In June 1873 he and his wife Susan J. returned to Phelps County, Missouri.
James M. and Susan J. were again listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Phelps
County, Missouri. They now had five children in the home. They were: James
M., age 16; Elizabeth C., age 13; Isaac B., age 7; John W., age 4; and Frances
E., age 10 months.
Buried in the George Smith Cemetery, near Flat.
