William Howard Montgomery, Sr., 99, of Pigeon Forge, TN, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, W. W. and Maude Montgomery; wife of 58 years, Louise R. Montgomery; son, Dr. W. H. Montgomery, Jr.; and grandson, Andrew T. Montgomery; brothers, Raymond, Frank, Fred, Delmar and Homer Montgomery; and sister, Grace Morrell.
An avid hunter, trapper, fisherman as well as an excellent gardener, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pigeon Forge and also a 60-year Master Mason. His great-great grandfather, Alexander Montgomery, fought in the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War with Col. Samuel Wear and John Sevier. He was the grandson of Civil War Captain William Winton Montgomery. His other grandfather, William A. Henderson, donated land for the construction of Henderson Chapel Baptist Church. Howard served on the Board of Directors of Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Sevier County and was a Reserve Deputy under Bruce Montgomery. Trained as a Machinist, he had been employed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Alcoa Aluminum Company, Robert Shaw Fulton Company, and retired after 30 years with Union Carbide Corporation, Nuclear Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tn.
Survivors include: Daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Dr. Harvey E. Sullivan, III of Sevierville; grandchildren, Carmen Montgomery and husband, Dr. David Chaffin of Fayetteville, AR, Will Montgomery and wife, Anna Montgomery of Franklin, TN, Harvey Sullivan, IV of Morristown, TN, and Dr. Philip Sullivan and wife, Kristy Moeller, M.D. of Bozeman, MT, as well as, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to a favorite charity.
Family and friends will meet at 10:00 am Saturday, June 3rd at Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge for the graveside service and interment. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com
