McCOIG , ETHEL M. - 84, died Saturday morning at Jefferson Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She had been a resident of Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center for the past three years. Mrs. McCoig was a member of First Baptist Church of Newport for over seventy years, and before her illness limited her participation, she was an active member of The Gleaners Sunday School Class. She and her late husband were long time leaders of Baptist Training Union for elementary aged children. Mrs. McCoig is remembered for her thoughtful cards and notes on special occasions, for her talents as a cook, and for her craftsmanship. She frequently provided homemade mints for wedding occasions and other milestone occasions in the lives of her family and friends. Mrs. McCoig retired following her long career as bookkeeper for Driskill and Ray Furniture. She is preceded in death by: her parents, the late Susie Smelcer and Alfred Griffin Sweeten her husband of more than fifty years, F. Nolen McCoig and her sister, Beulah Kate (Kitten) DeCarlo. Survivors include: brother, Eugene (Tubby) Sweeten sister, Louise Kilgore nephews, Newell Keith Kilgore, Steven DeCarlo, and Christopher DeCarlo and nieces, Marsha Kilgore, Eugenia Ann Silver, Cathy Holt, and Suzanne Dundas. She will also be missed by her many friends on the staff of Jefferson City Health and Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14 at Manes Funeral Home and funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. with the Reverend Doctors Rich Lloyd and Charlie W. Boggan officiating. A graveside service at Union Cemetery led by the Reverend James Lindsay will take place immediately after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Stokely Memorial Library of First Baptist Church of Newport. Manes Funeral Home in charge.
