Judge William Holt, Jr. dies at 70
Author: Duay O'Neil
SEVIERVILLE-Funeral services for Judge William R."Bill" Holt, Jr. were held yesterday at Sevierville's First Baptist Church.
Holt, 70, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, after a lengthy illness.
He was a retired Circuit Court Judge for the Second Judicial District of East Tennessee, having been elected in 1976. Holt replaced Judge Ben Strand, who had been appointed to the judgeship when Tennessee's legislature created a second post for the then-six-county district.
In his election to the bench, Holt ran unopposed."The fact that he faced no opposition for the post was a great tribute tohim," said Judge Kenneth Porter.
Holt served with Porter from 1976 until Porter's retirement and later with Judge Ben W. Hooper II until Holt left retired in1997.
During his time on the bench, Judge Holt heard the majority of the civil cases coming before the court, while Judge Porter presided mainly over criminal trials. "At times we swapped," said Porter. "During all our years together, we served in harmony without one disagreement whatsoever."
Holt, the son of the late William Rhodman Holt, Sr. and Lilly Williams Holt, was a nephew of the late Chancellor Buford A. Townsend.
A native of Sevier County, Holt and his wife of 49 years Pat married shortly after graduating from high school.
According to Porter, at the time Holt was a mechanic, who later decided to pursue his law degree.
Continuing his work as a mechanic and also as a musician,Holt eventually earned both his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Tennessee.
"He was a very talented guitarist," said Porter, "and often entertained at Judicial Conferences. He told us about playing in Sevierville when a very young Dolly Parton was beginning to perform and lifting her up onto the stage. He was a great friend of country music."
Holt was a member of First Baptist Church of Sevierville, the Tennessee Bar Association, and the Sevier County Bar Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Tim A. Holt.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law:Mark A. and Connie Holt, William Todd and Diane Holt, and Peggy Holt;grandsons: Matthew and Andrew Holt; granddaughters: Payton and Tatiana Holt;step-grandchildren: Jake Poe, Levi and Tanya Cooper, Mark, Nichole, Ryan, Sean, and Dane Indelicato, Robbie Trosper; nieces Kathy Cardwell Cofey and husband Bill, Vickie Cardwell Hill and husband James.
