WHITE PINE--Funeral services have been set for an 8-year-old girl who was shot by a 11-year-old boy in a trailer park in White Pine on Saturday, Oct. 3.
McKayla Dyer , 8, was fatally shot in the chest by a boy, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder on a juvenile petition.
Family members have asked those concerned to, in lieu of flowers, make donations to the Cooke-Campbell funeral home to help with family funeral expenses.
The Rev. Kenneth W. Norton will preside over funeral services on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., at Cooke-Campbell Chapel. Burial will be at Huan Cemetery, Tater Valley Road, Luttrell at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The family will receive friends at 5 to 7 p.m., prior to services.
The boy appeared before Jefferson County Juvenile Court Judge Dennis "Will" Roach II for a detention hearing, on Monday, Oct. 5. The proceedings were closed to the media and public.
The Plain Talk was unsuccessful in reaching Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig and District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn for comments on the incident.
Barry Fain, Jefferson County youth services officer, reportedly told the news media gathered at the Jefferson County Courthouse that the 4th Judicial District public defender's office was appointed to represent the boy.
Prosecutors have not stated whether the 11-year-old boy, who lived next door to Dyer , would be tried in court as an adult.
The children involved in the incident attended White Pine Elementary School.
The 11-year-old boy reportedly pointed a shotgun at Dyer from his bedroom window and shot Dyer .
She was found lying on the ground, and was taken from the trailer park on Robin Road to Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System's emergency room, where she was pronounced dead.
