The 6-year-old daughter of a former Stonewall coach was killed while crossing a highway Thursday.
Taryn Barrett was playing at a community center in the town of Coleman just before the accident at 11:55 a.m. Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troop F Captain Ronnie Hampton said the girl was crossing a highway to get to a roadside fireworks stand, run by her family.
OHP Trooper Justin Vargas said Barrett was hit by a 2009 Chevrolet car driven south by 67-year-old Ruth McGraw of Norman. She was taken by Johnston County EMS to the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant where she was pronounced dead. McGraw was not injured.
Taryn Barrett is the daughter of Mark Barrett, an assistant coach for Stonewall Schools from August 2013 to February 2014. Her funeral was held Friday evening at Atoka. Brown's Funeral Service in Atoka handled the services.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
"During the next six weeks, OHP troopers will conduct witness interviews and collect evidence while awaiting toxicology reports" Vargas said. "Upon the completion of the investigative process, the file will be submitted to the Johnston County district attorney who will determine if criminal charges are warranted."
