Harmon Russell Barrett, 80, of Norman, was born April 15, 1929, to John and Ora (Ogle) Barrett at Tabler, Oklahoma. He passed away Tuesday, April 13 at home with his family at his bedside.
Harmon grew up in Middleburg and East Valley View area and attended school at Dibble, OK. On July 21, 1947, he married Alma Jean Mills. At that time he was working in the wheat harvest and broom corn fields. In August of that year, he decided to go to Norman and look for work.
On August 6, 1947 he was hired by Tyler and Simpson Wholesale Grocery. After a short time in the warehouse he was promoted to a truck driver. He had been driving a truck for two years when he decided to move to Chickasha. He had been there for a short while when he received a call from Mr. F. E. McIntire and Lloyd Hoover. They wanted him to come back to Tyler and Simpson as a salesman. He took the job and moved back to Norman. It wasn't long after that he became one of Tyler and Simpson's top salesman. He retired in 1995 after 48 years as a salesman.
Harmon was an avid hunter. He loved the mountains around Pagosa Springs and Elephant Rock, Colorado. He was a charter member of the Norman Roundup Club. He along with his son, Rick, helped haul pipe and build the arena in east Norman.
Harmon, together with Jean, raised a rodeo family from team ropers, calf ropers to barrel racers. Their weekends were spent going to rodeos watching their children and grandchildren compete.
Harmon was a devoted Christian and a member of the Lakeside Church of God.
Harmon was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ora Barrett and a brother, Aubury.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean of the home; three daughters, Kay Davis and husband, David of Kingston, OK, Gail Petska and husband, Paul of Lexington, OK, Vickie Harris and husband, Kenny of Blanchard, OK; one son, Rick and wife, Jeanie Barrett of Norman, OK; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rex Barrett and Paul Barrett; three sisters, Leora Mills, Wanda Coward and Willena Naylor and a host of relatives and friends.
