Velma Pierson, 78, of Yukon passed away Monday, June 8, 1998 in Mustang. She was born Dec 8, 1919 in Tabler, Okla. and she was a retired psychiatric social worker for the State of Oklahoma. She had received her bachelor's degree from the Oklahoma College for Women and a master's degree in social work from the University of Okla. She was a former chief social worker for the department of mental health at Deaconess Hospital, University Medical Center, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Central State Mental Hospital. She was a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, Oklahoma Health and Welfare Association, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Women's Society, Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society, National Association of Social Workers, a former member of Central Church of Christ in Chickasha and a current member of West Point Christian Church in Yukon. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Byers and Ted R. Pierson, Jr., a brother Leonard Spoon, her parents, G. S. & Zorada Spoon and an aunt Mary Ogle Gay. Survivors include: her son and daughter-in-law Paul S. and Dorothy Byers of Tempe Ariz.; her daughter and son-in-law Yolanda and Wayne Nivin of Yukon; her grandchildren, Stephen, Kevin, David, Matthew, Joseph, Brian, Sasha and Justin; six great grandsons, seven nieces and three nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday June 13 in the West Point Christian Church south of Yukon.
