Laverne Whinery Goodnight stepped into the presence of the Lord, at her home with her family by her side, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 3:15 p.m., after a short illness of lung cancer, lasting months longer than any doctor said she would.
Throughout her life she touched the lives of many people as a beloved Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother and Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She was a treasured Aunt, best friend and mentor to many people, and teacher to many ages over the years. She was also involved in mission work in Haiti.
Born at Tabler, Oklahoma, July 11, 1923. She was the first of four daughters of Glen and Georgea Ogle who preceded her in death. Glen passed January of 1980 and Georgia passed December of 1993. She married Frank Whinery , August of 1947, he preceded her in death January of 1966. She married Clarence Goodnight in March of 1973, who preceded her in death in April of 2004.
She was Assistant Pastor of Tabler Gospel Tabernacle, Choir Director, Women's Worship Group, Sunday School Teacher and also preached and sang monthly at Shannon Springs and Glenhaven Care Facilities. She loved singing, preaching, and teaching about God's love.
After many years of working on the family farm, she began working at WB Flying School, Gilkey's Hardware and George & Sons Studios, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She retired from JC Pennys of Oklahoma City in 1986.
She is survived by three sisters, Juanita Ogle Jackson of Lubbock, Texas, Cleta Faye Ogle Ashford and husband Melton (Gub) Ashford of Blanchard, Oklahoma and Wilma Joyce Ogle Pittman and husband Billy Pittman of Rush Springs, Oklahoma.
She is survived by her daughter, Rhelda Mosier Nye of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a son, Charles Lynn Whinery and wife, Tawanna of Dibble, Oklahoma, six grandsons, William Frank (Billy) Whinery and wife Melanie of Noble, Oklahoma, Bryan Whinery and wife, Sheila of Norman, Oklahoma, Matt Whinery and wife Victoria of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Stacy Glen Mosier of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Kevin Mosier and wife Melanie of Baltimore, Maryland, Chris Douglas and wife Brandi of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and granddaughter Vanessa Wright of Blanchard, Oklahoma and 12 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Grand Assembly of God in Chickasha, Oklahoma located at 102 East Almar Drive under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home with interment to follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha.
