- [S142] Newspaper Article, Akron Beacon Journal (OH), 26 Mar 2004.
Glenna Rae Williams , 82, of Rootstown, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Woodlands at Robinson in Ravenna.
She was born May 22, 1921, in Oklahoma, to Alton H. and Mamie (Tomlinson) Williams . She inspired young men and women to be physical education and health educators, recreation directors, camp leaders, and outdoor educators.
She and her Kent State colleagues authored "Fitness for Women." The book was the number-one best-seller for Brown and Company for many years.
She was an excellent golfer and coached the women's golf team at Kent State before Title IX. She took many teams to college women's state golf tournaments and national college golf tournaments. She and the Bachna's started the women's gymnastic team.
She loved the outdoors. She fed the birds year-round and grew beautiful flowers for the birds and her friends. After retirement from Kent State, she taught schoolchildren at Beckwith's Orchard. She was a tour guide on the Cuyahoga Falls River boats. She loved to teach the history and geography of Northeast Ohio and the country.
She loved animals and supported the Animal Protective League of Portage County by adopting dogs from them.
She taught at Alamogordo, N.M., Oklahoma State, Louisiana State, Auburn, Northern Illinois, Florida State, and Kent State University. She loved to travel and see the country. This enabled her to do two things she loved -- travel and teach.
She earned an undergraduate and graduate degree from Texas Women's University and did doctorate study at the University of Southern California.
Survivors include her brother, Alton Pete (Vivian) Williams of Perryton, Texas; nieces, Glenna Wall of Amarillo, Texas, Lynne Williams of San Diego, Calif., and Sharon Wilcox of Miles City, Mont.; and nephew, Al Williams of Perryton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by brother, Jack Williams .
Burial will be in Perryton, Texas, at a later date. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Animal Protective League of Portage County, 8122 Infirmary Rd., Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
