Durango resident Ina Mae McDaniel Hankla died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 86. Mrs. Hankla was born to H.F. "Spud" and Winnie Bess McDaniel on Jan. 16, 1924, in Felt, Okla., where she grew up and graduated from Felt High School. She attended Panhandle Agricultural & Mechanical College, now Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where she received her teaching certification. Mrs. Hankla moved back to Cimarron County, where she became the commerce teacher at Boise City High School, teaching typing, bookkeeping and shorthand. On June 29, 1944, in Clayton, N.M., she married Alva Leon Hankla , who was in the Army. When World War II ended and Mr. Hankla was discharged, they returned to Cimarron County. In 1946, Mr. Hankla and his brother, Wilfred, purchased a used-furniture store in Boise City. Mrs. Hankla became the bookkeeper and, in effect, the third partner, her family said. In 1952, they built their own, larger store. After buying out Wilfred Hankla 's interest in 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Hankla continued to serve their neighbors. "Hankla furniture expanded and grew until it was one of the most respected furniture stores on the High Plains," her family wrote. In 1985, the Hanklas sold the business to a longtime employee. In Boise City, Mrs. Hankla was active in the Garden Club, St. Paul's Methodist Church and all of her children's activities. After several years of dividing their time between Boise City in the spring and fall, Durango in the summer and Mesa, Ariz., in the winter, they moved to Vallecito near their daughter, Cheryl Ellis. The Hanklas were avid square dancers, an activity they continued for years after their retirement. Mrs. Hankla was also a member of the Vallecito Service League, before she and her husband moved into Durango to live at Sunshine Gardens West. Mrs. Hankla was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alva Leon Hankla . She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Ellis, of Durango; son, Larry "Hank" Hankla , of Chevy Chase, Md.; sisters Dot Sizemore of Boise City and Bess Reed of Amarillo, Texas; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Boise City. Burial took place in the family plot at Cimarron Memorial Cemetery there. [S147] Find a Grave, (Memorial: 70328169).
