TABLER MAN FIRST CRASH VICTIM OF '40
Joe Walter Smith Fatally Injured As Car Overturns
The first traffic fatality of the year occurred when Joe Walter Smith, 42, was fatally injured as his car overturned a mile east of Tabler early Wednesday morning.
Highway patrolman here had not completed their investigation of the Tabler farmer's death but said it was presumed he lost control of his car after meeting an oncoming truck. Patrolmen were called to the scene at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday when the truck driver called from Tabler and then went back to the scene.
Thrown clear of the car as it overturned three times, Mr. Smith's body was found 75 feet from the point where the car stopped, Patrolman Bob Lowell said. It was evident that the man got up and waundered around before he died, the officer added.
Mr. Smith leaves his wife, two sons, Vernon and Grady at home in the Tabler community; a daughter, Mrs. Rosalie Light, Richmond, Calif.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Smith, Duncan; six sisters, Mrs. Susie Lewis, Duncan, Mrs. Mabel Mara, Borger, Texas, Mrs. Ethel Musick, Bowie, Texas, Mrs. Dena Reed, Hominy, Mrs. Lucille Musick who lives in California, and Mrs. Edna Ray, Seattle, Wash.
He was born southwest of Chickasha and had lived in the county all his life.
