SHERWOOD , EDWARD JACK - age 96, of Knoxville, died of heart failure Wednesday morning December 31, 2003 at Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital. A native of Chilhowie, VA, Mr. Sherwood was a 1929 graduate of Carson Newman College where he met his wife of 72 years, Lillian Jenkins Sherwood . He was a long time board member of Carson Newman College, founding director of Volunteer Bank which was purchased by First American Bank, and was owner of two family furniture businesses with his sons, Don and Bobby, Maryville Furniture Co. in Maryville and O.P. Jenkins Furniture Co. in Knoxville. He was a long time member of Fifth Ave. Baptist Church and presently a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. Having been a coach and teacher at Harrison-Chilhowee Academy and Alcoa High, when first out of college, he was a sports fan and avid golfer. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death: by his parents, Jackson and Kate Sherwood brothers, Vance and Fred sisters, Ruby Crenshaw, Elizabeth Kelly and Alice Rector. Mr. Sherwood is survived by: his sons & daughters-in-law, Don E. & Patricia Sherwood of Maryville, Bobby & Nancy Sherwood of Knoxville five grandchildren, Susan & Michael McKerley, Alan & Michelle Sherwood all of Franklin, TN, Edward Sherwood of Nashville, Meg & Terry Troutman of Knoxville, Beth & Greg Helton of Houston, TX and nine great grandchildren. Funeral service 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Dr. Larry Fields officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church of Bearden, "God is Alive" Fund, 6300 Deane Hill Dr., Knoxville, TN 37919 or the Jack & Lillian Sherwood Scholarship Fund, Carson Newman College, 1707 Russell Ave., Jefferson City, TN 37760. The family will recieve friends 6:00-7:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
