Earl Mack Barkley , 74, died Friday, July 16, 2004.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Barkley was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Panhandle and had been a resident of Borger for most of his life. He owned Barkley Brothers Dirt Contracting and was a licensed electrician. Earl was a member of VFW Post 1789 and IBEW Local 602. He was a member of the Army, serving in the Korean War, where he was known as "Sergeant Tex." While serving, he received the Combat Infantry Badge, District Unit Citation and Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.
" Dougle ," as he was known to family and friends, had a love for western swing music and led his own band, the Western Swing Boys, for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L.W. and Earlean Barkley and two brothers, Charles Barkley and Joe Barkley .
Survivors include his wife Betty; a sister Louise Herdman and husband, Arnold, of Georgetown; a son, Clyde Barkley and wife, Carol Ann, of Inola, Okla.; six daughters, Cathy Day and husband, Terry, of Inola, Lorraine Mason and David Doty of Malvern, Ark., Diana Snow and husband, Jim, of San Diego, Calif., and Janet Wooten and husband, Doug, Patty Payne and husband, Randy, and Karen Weir and husband, Jim, all of Amarillo; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund benefiting Odyssey HealthCare Hospice in Amarillo has been established. Those wishing to make contributions in honor of Mr. Barkley may send contributions to the Earl Barkley Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 50093, Amarillo, TX, 79159.
