Zona Hayes Johnson , a lifelong resident of Bradley County, passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000.
She was 94 years of age and was the last surviving child of the late Joe L. and Carolyn Ball Hayes.
She was an 89-year member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was known for her ministry of care for other people. She will be remembered by many for the numerous occasions when she cared for them during times of illness or after the passing away of a loved one. She has been described as the "ultimate untrained nurse."
She will also be remembered for her devotion to her husband of 78 years, whom she supported in the operation of his local barbershop. The strength of their relationship was accredited to their sense of humor, strength of character, and commitment to communication.
Zona 's memory will be cherished by her husband, August Johnson of Cleveland; her four daughters and sons-in-law: Edith and Melvin Ownby, Doris and Ennis Ownby, Reta and Alvin Goodwin, and Sylvia Oberon Johnson ; two sons and daughters-in-law: Gene and Evelyn Johnson of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ted and Maxine Johnson of Cleveland, Helen Johnson of Hickory, N.C., widow of her son, Bill Johnson , who passed away on Aug. 14, 1998; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Buck Harbin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Allen Ownby, Mervin Ownby, Darrell Johnson , Danny Johnson , Eric Swafford and Brad Montgomery serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Bradley Home Health Care, or Bradley Memorial Hospice in lieu of floral arrangements.
