Doris Johnson Ownby obituary
- [S142] Newspaper Article, Cleveland Daily Banner (TN), 20 Apr 2001.
August M. Johnson , a lifelong resident of Bradley County, passed away at his home Thursday morning, April 19, 2001.
At 97 years of age, he was one of two surviving children of the late William B. and Minnie Prince Johnson . His sister, Lizzie Breeden of Cleveland, is 95 years old.
In 1922, at 19 years of age, August was married, bought a farm, built a house, joined Macedonia Baptist Church and began his profession. Owner of Johnson 's Barber Shop on Wildwood Avenue, he retired after 75 years and moved his shop to a converted grainery on his farm located off Ladd Springs Road, where he continued to cut hair until he was 92.
As an active member of his church, he served as a deacon, song director and taught the adult men's Sunday school class for many years. He will best be remembered as a devoted husband to his loving wife of 78 years -- theirs was a relationship like no other.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zona Hayes Johnson ; his eldest daughter, Edith Johnson Ownby; and his two eldest sons: Harold Eugene "Gene" Johnson and William "Bill" J. Johnson .
His memory will be cherished by his surviving three daughters, his youngest son, and their spouses: Doris and Ennis Ownby, Sylvia Oberon Johnson , Reta and Alvin Goodwin, Ted and Maxine Johnson , Melvin Ownby, widow of Edith Ownby, Helen Johnson , widow of Bill Johnson , and Evelyn Johnson , widow of Gene Johnson ; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and four nieces.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Buck Harbin officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Darrel Johnson , Danny Johnson , Mervin Ownby, Allen Ownby, Eric Swafford and Brad Montgomery serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital and Bradley Home Health.
