Betty S. Maples, age 79 of Gatlinburg, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012. Betty was a majorette for Sevier County High School and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was the first person chosen to walk “Smokey” onto the football field at UT. She was also Sports Magazine “National Campus Queen” in 1954. Betty was a 7 time Golf Club Champion at Gatlinburg Country Club in the 1970’s.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia “Pat” Ogle.
Survivors include her husband, Roy J. Maples; children, Cathy and Billy Carne, Mark Maples; grandchildren, Tommy Bullen and wife Jennifer, Chesleigh Gore and husband Jason, Matthew Carne, Hannah Carne, Chanley Maples; great-grandchildren, Tori, Madison and Thyme; sister, Mary Nelle Blanton and husband Al; brother-in-law, Charles Earl Ogle; numerous nieces and nephews.
Because of her love of nature and wildlife the family asks that contributions be made to Friends of the Smokies, P.O. Box 1660, Kodak, TN 37764.
The family will receive friends 2-4 PM Tuesday with memorial service to follow at 4 PM at the family home, 1938 East Parkway, Gatlinburg. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
