Jess E. Carr, age 91 of Sevierville, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014.
Mr. Carr was born in the Sugarlands area of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was a veteran of U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Quartermaster Corps and drove a truck for the "Red Ball Express". On D-Day 3 Jess stepped onto the Normandy Beach and later saw action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhinelands in Central Europe and Ardenness. He received five theatre ribbons with five bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Jess supported his family as a farmer and carpenter. While working for the CCC's he helped build the Sugarlands Mountain Trail at Fighting Creek. The trail runs from Elmont to the top of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Later he worked for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service for 26 years. He was instrumental in helping to build Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail as well as helped to maintain numerous historic buildings throughout the park. He worked at Elkmont and Tremont and helped build most of the buildings that still exist today.
Jess was a wonderful Christian husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing but especially enjoyed his family. He was a lifelong member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Henrietta Whaley Carr; parents, Lee and Pearl Reagan Carr; grandson, Josh Carr; sisters, Bess King, Evelyn Myers, and Dorothy Smelcer; brother, Jim King; sons-in-law, Jack Laws and Luther Whaley.

Children: Mona Maples and husband Ralph, Stanley Carr and wife Loretta, Roma Tinker and husband Eddie, Larry Carr and wife Brenda, Brenda Laws, Dana Carr, Vickie King, Terry Whaley, Gary Carr and wife Rebecca, and Jeffrey Carr and wife Lori
Grandchildren: Sid Maples, Heather Maples, Lee Carr, Nicole Quilliams, Nathan Carr, Cynthia Tinker, Edward Tinker, Shawn Carr, Shane Carr, Shannon Carr, Jesse Inman, Hollie Sparks, Isaac Inman, Baron Laws, Lindsey Carr Rook, Chad Cole, Logan Carr, Garrett King, Levi Whaley, Sarah Whaley, Christen Vaden, Richard Carr, Lacey Carr, Katti Carr Johnson, Spencer Carr, and Jared Carr

Funeral service 4 PM Saturday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Ben Whitted, Rev. Lee Carr and Rev. Nathan Carr officiating. Special music by Ray Ball, Levi Whaley and Archie Watkins. Interment 2 PM Sunday in Zion Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post # 104. Pallbearers will be Sidney Maples, Edward Tinker, Shawn Carr, Isaac Inman, Logan Carr, Garrett King, Richard Carr and Spencer Carr.
