LYON , JERROD LYNN - age 16, of Knoxville, passed away Friday evening, July 20, 2001 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Jerrod had a big heart, was committed to his church, and was loved by everyone that knew him. He was a very special nephew to all his aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William H. and Agnes Lyon . Jerrod is survived by his loving family, parents, Jacky and Cheryl Lyon of Knoxville; sister, Chelsy Goleman-Alvarez of Dallas, TX; grandparents, Joseph and Dorothy Alvarez; niece, Maria Masingo; aunts and uncles, Tom and Sharon Lyon , Dicky and Kathy Lyon , James Lyon , Bobby and Theresa Lyon , Linda and Bo Loveday, Paul and Missy Lyon , Jack and Brenda Roberts, Danny Lyon , Sandra and Joe Mason and Patricia and Jeff Holiday; and several cousins. Jerrod is at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Branville Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Roseberry Cemetery. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the trust fund at AmSouth Bank on Washington Pike, in Jerrod 's name.

KNOXVILLE (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy who was enveloped in a fireball after unknowingly igniting a lighter near a leak from a natural gas pipeline has died.
Jerrod Lyon -- who suffered third-degree burns over 95 percent of his body -- had been in critical condition at the Vanderbilt Regional Medical Center Burn Unit in Nashville for almost a week. He was pronounced dead just before midnight on Friday.
Lyon never regained full consciousness, but seemed to respond to the presence of children in his youth group who visited him earlier last week, according to youth pastor Anthony Banks' wife, Melissa Banks. Lyon served Branville Baptist Church as assistant Sunday school director, usher and youth vice president.
Banks said Lyon 's parents were devastated by his death, and were returning to Knoxville from Nashville to make funeral arrangements.
"He was so young," Banks said.
Lyon and 16-year-old Charles Mynatt were walking to a late-night basketball game July 14 when the accident occurred. The flame from Lyon 's lighter sparked a flash fire, leaving him critically burned from his head to his ankles.
Mynatt was hospitalized at UT Medical Center with first- and second-degree burns. He was released several days after the incident, but had to return after suffering complications. He was later released.
The Knoxville Utility Board, which maintains the pipeline, issued a statement Saturday in which President Larry Fleming expressed "great sorrow" at news of Lyon 's death.
KUB -- which originally attributed the leak to a corroded section of cast-iron pipe -- said Friday that it was not caused by a small hole, but a rupture nearly 4 inches long.
Fleming said the rupture could have occurred a few hours before Lyon was burned, but insisted the agency still could not have detected the leak. When the incident occurred, area residents said they had notified the KUB of a gas odor they had smelled for several days.
