Crime scene specialist: Slaying victim killed in his own bathroom
Clues indicate Tolliver killed in own bathroom

Crime scenes speak to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. MacKenzie Alleman, and this one told her plenty.
Alleman, a crime scene specialist at KCSO, spent hours Wednesday translating just what the scores of photographs shown in Knox County Criminal Court indicated about the 2010 death of Roe Tolliver, 77.
Vicky Lynn Gay, also known as Vicky Lynn Perry, is being tried this week in Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz’s courtroom in the beating and stabbing death of Tolliver inside his Deaderick Road home in South Knox County. Tolliver was last seen alive on Jan. 26, 2010. His body was found in his house on Feb. 6, 2010.
Gay, 54, suffered a stroke soon after she was arrested on suspicion of felony murder in Tolliver’s death and is being tried while strapped to a hospital gurney.
Alleman told jurors that Tolliver’s deadly struggle with an attacker was confined to the master bathroom where his body was found. He had been stabbed at least twice and struck in the head — likely by a tequila bottle found shattered. Blood stained the inside and outside of a bathtub, suggesting that the brunt of the attack took place there.
The lack of stab wounds to the longsleeved shirt that clad Tolliver’s body, along with bloody clothes stashed in a trash can in the bathroom, suggested that his attacker stripped him of his clothes and then reclothed him in the shirt before partially wrapping him in a quilt and placing his bloody head on a pillow on the bathroom floor, she testified.
A photograph of Tolliver’s hands showed no obvious defense wounds.
Alleman said she found a trail of blood spatter on the walls leading from the master bath and down a hallway toward the kitchen, suggesting that it was cast off by Tolliver’s attacker as he or she fled.
It took some forensic testing on a bloody knife found wrapped inside the quilt on Tolliver’s body to make it talk, she noted.
“The blood DNA on the knife matched Roe Tolliver, and the touch DNA on the handle matched Vicky Gay,” Alleman told jurors.
Authorities later discovered that Jimmy Dunn, whom an earlier witness identified as Gay’s sometime lover, traded Tolliver’s truck for cash and a small recreational vehicle after his death. Tolliver’s belongings, including a chain saw and vacuum cleaner, were found during a search of Dunn’s residence, testimony showed. Tolliver’s pocket watch and wallet were found inside the RV. Dunn has not been charged.
Prosecutor Kevin Allen insists that Gay, who had become Tolliver’s livein girlfriend, grew tired of Tolliver, killed him and stole his belongings, including the truck.
Gay’s daughter Nicole Veals told jurors Wednesday that her mother called her in the days before Tolliver’s body was discovered and asked her to transfer the title of the vehicle to Gay’s name. Veals refused.
