Resided in Sevierville, TN
Georgia Nell (Worth) Runyan, age 87 of Sevierville, passed away Sunday morning, October 4, 2015, after a brief illness. Above all else, Mrs. Runyan will be remembered for her generosity and kind, gentle heart. She was born March 28, 1928, in Sevierville, TN, and attended public schools in Sevier County. Around 1950, Mrs. Runyan earned a Bachelor's Degree from Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, TN. She returned to Sevier County and was employed by the school system, where she taught for three decades, mostly at New Center School. In 1962, she earned the degree of Master of Science from the University of Tennessee. She loved her vocation, and remained an advocate for children; the stories and success of her students remained a source of joy throughout her life.
She wed James Runyan, a native of Sevierville, on March 15, 1968, and was a caring, devoted wife. Mrs. Runyan was also an attentive daughter and beloved aunt. She was a selfless caregiver, tending both her parents until their deaths. Her cheerful, charitable spirit was also shown through her volunteer work. Mrs. Runyan was active in the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, and an invited member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority. She was a member of Sevierville First United Methodist Church, where she donated her time to the administrative office. She also volunteered at LeConte Medical Center as long as she was able.
She loved all her family, piano, and local history, and was an avid genealogist. She had a flair for elegance, both inside and out. Mrs. Runyan will be remembered for her exemplary Christian virtues, especially her humility, good-temper, and care for the most vulnerable beauty of God's creation. She was a loyal friend, conveying support with her tender, always positive words. Her sweetness and abilities to create a caring home were blessings for her entire extended family.
Mrs. Runyan was preceded in death by her loving parents, George Washington Worth and Lizzie (McMahan) Worth; sister Mary Marie Worth; brother J.A. "Nub" Worth and sister-in-law Nell (Fields) Worth; and brother Hal McMahan Worth and sister-in-law Emma Lou (Herlong) Worth. She is survived by her husband, James Runyan; cherished friends John Charles Shields, Geri Shields, and Debbie Dockery, of Sevierville; nephew George W. "Bill" Worth (Linda) of Chesapeake, VA; niece Betsey (Worth) Ward (Larry) of Lake City, FL; 4 great nieces and nephews: Jacob Hill (Deserrai), Ginger Hill, Stefanie Ward-Cerny; and Kelly Rippard (Jason); and 4 great-great nieces and nephews: Alyssa, Dani, Emma, and Logan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sevierville First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 214 Cedar Street, Sevierville, TN 37862.
