Sheriff: Remains from train crash appear to be those of William Blount students
Two teens who attend William Blount High School appear to have been the victims of a weekend train collision, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
The victims were tentatively identified as Jessie Hines Jenkins, 18, of Friendsville and Kevin Ray Stinnett, 17, of Maryville, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Tattoos and wallets found at the scene led to their tentative identification, according to a news release from Blount County Sheriff James Berrong.
The teens attended William Blount High School, the release states.
Autopsies were conducted Monday at the Regional Forensic Center in Knoxville. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting verification from medical authorities on dental record comparisons before positive identification can be made.
The victims were killed when a CSX train struck them about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the Binfield area of Blount County off Clover Hill Road, according to Sheriff's spokeswoman Marian O'Briant.
O'Briant said it is unclear why they were on the tracks.
The train was traveling from Cincinnati to Hamlet, N.C., according to Bob Sullivan, spokesman for CSX.
Sullivan said the train had two locomotives and 68 freight cars but could not elaborate on what the cars were carrying.
Investigators spent Saturday searching for the point of impact, saying the scene was more than a mile long.
