THIRD RAIL WRECK KILLS 4; MANY HURT
MAJOR IN ARMY AMONG DEAD AT ELMHURST
Victims Smothered by Gravel from Truck.
Edition: Chicago Tribune
Four persons were killed, five were so seriously injured that they may die, and a score of others were less seriously injured early last evening when an electric train on the Aurora, Elgin, and Chicago third rail line crashed into a motor truck with a heavy load of crushed stone on the York street crossing in Elmhurst. The electric train was said to be running sixty miles an hour.
Three men were killed instantly. The fourth, Maj. Robert E. Brooks, U.S. A., died fifteen minutes after reaching the hospital. Maj. Brooks was assistant recruiting officer for the Chicago district.
The Dead.
Maj. ROBERT E. BROOKS, aged 46, Crescent boulevard, Glen Ellyn.
HARRY WESTPHAL 417 WASHINGTON avenue, Elgin.
W.F. MILLER, Little Rock, Ark; on his way to Elgin.
R.W. DUNLAP, Wheaton; motorman.
May Die.
CAPT. FRED SKONING, U.S. A,; believed to live at Minneapolis; skull fractured; at the Oak Park hospital.
GEORGE KRANZ, aged 45, editor of Herold-Germania, Elgin; in ternal injuries, leg fractured. At the West Suburban hospital, Oak Park.
JOE ZALINSKY, 1047 Bellevue avenue, Elgin. Internal injuries, nose leg broken. At the West Suburban hospital.
CHARLES JONES, age 31, 2426 West Monroe street, Chicago, Injured internally. At West Suburban hospital. Driver of the truck.
WALTER WESTPHAL, Elgin. Skull fractured. At the Oak Park hospital. Believed to have been on the truck. Believed to be brother of Harry Westphal, who was killed.
Truck Stalled on Track.
The truck's engine had "gone dead" and stalled the truck on the tracks. The electric train was too near and running too fast to be stopped in time to avoid the collision. The truck was hurled aside, but the greater part of the load of crushed stone which it contained was hurtled through the shattered front of the first car, burying the men in the smoking car.
Dr. E.S. Higley, who was in the car, declared he believed two of the men taken dead from the wreck were smothered to death under the stone and that their injuries were incidental. The man sitting beside him was killed.
The impact between the train and the truck, which weighed several tons, was so violent that both coaches of the train were hurled from the track. The momentum at which the train was rushing carried it on for 600 feet, plowing up the right of way. There was no watchman at the crossing.
Motorman Mangled.
The motorman, R.W. Dunlap, was killed instantly, his body was crushed almost beyond recognition. Charles Jones, the driver of the truck, was delirious at the hospital and was unable to explain how the accident occurred. He was operated on shortly before midnight, and his recovery is doubtful.
F.C. Wilson, the conductor, said he was in the center of the first coach when he heard some one scream: "Look out for the wagon." He lost consciousness at that moment.
Walter Westphal, who is reported as having been on the truck with Jones, was still delirious at a late hour last night. The combined efforts of two nurses and a doctor were necessary to hold him in the hospital bed. For two hours he shrieked almost continuously;
"It's the third rail. It's the third rail. Look out, look out!"
The killed and seriously injured were practically all in smoking compartment of the first coach. The limited

train which was bound for Elgin and
Aurora, was loaded with suburbanites homeward bound. It would have been divided into two sections at Wheaton.
The crash was heard for nearly a mile, and the nearby countryside was soon at the scene of the catastrophe. Ambulances were sent from Wheaton, but although the wreck occurred at 7 O'clock it was not until 9 that the debris was cleared and the injured received in the Oak Park hospital.
Brooks Just Promoted.
Maj. Robert E. Brooks, who died soon after arriving at the hospital, had just yesterday received his commission from Washington which promoted him from a captaincy. His widow and 18 year old daughter, Helen; hurried to his beside from their home in Glen Ellyn. They arrived a few minutes after he died.
The major enlisted in the regular army when he was 17 years old and had seen service in all parts of the country and in the Philippines. Shortly before the war he was retired from active service, but when war broke out he was recalled and made assistant to Col. Buffington, chief recruiting officer for the Chicago district. His headquarters were at 506 South State street.
Captain Unidentified for Hours.
Capt. Fred Skoning lay at the Oak Park hospital unidentified for four hours after the wreck. At midnight a search of his clothing disclosed the name of "Lieut. Fred Skoning" sewed into his uniform, but two silver bars on the shoulders of his coat showed his rank had since been raised to that of captain. The name of the maker was A.J. Lofgren of Minneapolis.
Harold Jauch, who was at first reported to be a private and later a captain in the army, told doctors at the hospital that although he was in the draft he had not yet entered the army and that he was employed by Harris, Westbrook & Co., La Salle street brokers.
Walter Schoenheider of Elmhurst, a mechanic, was riding on the truck, but leaped just before the crash occurred. He escaped injury and went directly to his home in Elmhurst. He said the truck stalled on the crossing and that the efforts of Jones to start it were unavailing, although the driver stuck to his task until the train hit them.
W.F. Miller, whose dead body was recovered from under a crushing weight of stone, was visiting at the home of his brother-in-law, George Flick of Elgin. He had come here from Arkansas to be at the bedside of his dying mother at the Flick home.
When the wife of Dr. F.H. Langhorst, an Elgin physician, who had been expected to arrive home from Chicago on the ill-fated train, failed to come in with the survivors, her husband was frantic for fear she had been killed or was lying unidentified in some hospital. At 11:30 she came home.
She had missed the train that was wrecked and had waited till the next one.
Harry Smith one of the Chicago people among the injured walked into the hospital unassisted, but later became semi-delirious. His condition, however, is not serious. Smith, who is only 16, was on his way to Elgin in search of a job.
The wreck train left Chicago at 6 o'clock. It is known as the "No. 7 limited." After leaving Forest Park it runs at high speed and does not stop at Elmhurst, the scene of the accident.
Injured Less Seriously.
Besides the killed and seriously injured, the following were less seriously hurt:
F.C. WILSON, conductor, aged 28, 318 West Illinois street, Wheaton. Face and body cut. May lose one eye. At the West suburban hospital.
Harry SMITH, aged 16, 738 East Thirty-ninth street, Chicago. Slight concussion of the brain, bruised and cut. At the West suburban hospital.
HAROLD JAUCH, aged 25, Glen Ellyn. Arm broken, bruised and cut. Suffered from loss of blood. At Oak Park hospital.
MISS ESTHER BAILEY, 270 DU PAGE street, Elgin. Nose broken, body bruised. Went home.
MISS MABEL COLVILLE, 421 Franklin street, Elgin. Ankle sprained, minor injuries. Went home.
Dr. E.S. Higley, Glen Ellyn. Hand cut.
Many other passengers who were slightly cut and bruised went home without waiting for medical attention.
