Hill and his wife, the former Lucille Dennis, at their Carson Springs home? They had lived in the home they built since about 1985. He died in 2010 apparently from brain cancer. From what I understand, he was a Three War Veteran, and perhaps one of the very few such from Cocke County. Do you know of any others living or dead? Author: David Popiel Even with the slight warming trend towards the end of March in our hometown many are outside taking advantage of spring sunshine to work, exercise, or travel more without the threat of ice and snow. For example, you have seen the construction work begin for the new home of Lowland Credit Union in the former Goddard real estate building. At the same time the folks with Memorial Baptist Church are anxious to have renovation going soon on the new sanctuary off West Broadway, says Alvin Watts. As for me, I’ve been traveling around in search of more war veterans. I visited the home in Carson Springs of the late Three War Veteran Jimmie Frank Hill and you will read more about him. Last week we began talking with James Carpenter, a Three War Veteran since World War II and how he has a mission to recognize modern Three War Veterans. Lucille remembered me from our visit going on almost seven years ago and how the time flies. She is doing well at age 93 and reminded me that Jimmie had died on April 29, 2010. Like Mr. Carpenter, Jimmie suffered disabling injuries during service. Jimmie fell off an aircraft wing and broke his back. At the end of WW II he was stationed in Japan during the US occupation and then went to McDill Air Force Base in Tampa and later the famous Roswell AFB, New Mexico. Looking back on his career I was reminded he worked in the heat and air conditioning business in my hometown of Miami, Florida during the 1980s before returning to Newport in 1984. That’s when he met Grady Dennis’s daughter, Lucille, whose mother was the former Elma Proffitt. It was good to revisit this interesting veteran and his life and times. ...
