Reva Juanita Proffitt Ray, age 91, of Newport, passed away Monday, December 6, 2004 at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.
She was a retired school teacher and a member of the First United Methodist Church. In her younger years she was very athletic, having played basketball in High School as well as college and later was an avid golfer. She was Miss East Tennessee and runner -up in the Miss Tennessee pageant.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jeter S. Ray, parents, Dr. A. L. and Ola Proffitt; brother, Ray Proffitt.
She is survived by her sons Richard J. Ray of West Palm Beach, Fla., Donald J. Ray of TulIahoma, Tn., daughter Elaine Brock of Idaho, grandchildren Jeff Ray of Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth Umpierre, of Citra, Fla., Jackie Brock of Idaho, Justin Ray of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jennifer Ray of Seattle, Washington, Tony Ray of Kodiak, Alaska, 5 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews Linda Hammondtree of Knoxville, Mack Ray of Texas, Pat Proffitt, Mike Proffitt, Chris Proffitt all of Newport, Tony Proffitt of Sevierville, and Eutha Hageman ofRogersville.
Special thanks to Wellington Place and to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in Manes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Freddrick Long officiating burial will be in the Union Cemetery.
Family will receive friends 9-10 a.m. Thursday prior to the service. In leiu of flowers donations may be made to the Newport Animal Shelter 350 Pennell Lane Newport, Tn. 37821.
