(February 6, 1947 - June 2, 2016) U.S. Veteran Mr. David I. Jones, age 69 of Newport, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 2, 2016. He was raised in New Market, Tennessee. He moved to Newport and married the love of his life, Linda S. Gilland in 1971. He served in the United States Army. He was a door gunner in the Vietnam War. He served three years and saved several men after two choppers were shot down. He received several medals while serving. His passion was being a reserve deputy at the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Wilsonville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mamie Gilland of whom he thought of as his mother; his parents, George Douglass and Viola Ann Jones; three brothers, Wade, Tommy, and Gary; and one sister, Katherine. Those left to cherish his precious memories are his wife, Linda; two daughters, Angelia S. Jones Black and Sparkle D. Jones Watts; grandchildren, Caitlyn Watts and Gaven, Cameryn, and Caden Black; his beloved Yorkie, Bently; sister-in-laws, Mary Alexander, Irene Gilland, and Geraldine Dalton all of Newport, and Shelby Pierson of Florida; two brothers, Bill Jones and Dale Jones of Jefferson City; and several nieces and nephews. Military honors will be at 5:00 pm Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Wilsonville Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday at Wilsonville Baptist Church.
