WILMINGTON – James Edward Caton , 80, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at his home. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Temple Baptist Church with Dr. D.E. Parkerson and the Rev. E.C. Mattocks officiating.
He was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Pacolet Mills, S.C., the oldest son of Leonard Seaton and Ella Kirby Caton .
He served his country in the Army Signal Corps in World War II in New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines. Afterward, he was employed by the Veterans Administration in Atlanta and later in Philadelphia.
Mr. Caton was a graduate of LaSalle University in Philadelphia. He retired from the Social Security Administration as assistant district manager in 1984.
Mr. Caton was a longtime, active member in the mission and ministries of Temple Baptist Church, where he served in a wide range of positions. These included adult sunday school teacher, deacon, deacon emeritus, director of a youth sunday school department, and chairman of the music committee.
He was a member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club and served as president as well as lieutenant governor for the Carolinas District, which is currently Division No. 26. Mr. Caton was very active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), serving as president of Chapter 337.
Mr. Caton was an avid gardener, as well as keenly interested in music, reading, politics, travel and photography.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Powell Caton ; two daughters, Debbie Caton Rogers and husband, Bryan, of Greenville and Carol Caton Todd and husband, Jerry, of Delway; and two grandchildren, Alisa and Benjamin Todd.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

His presence on Earth will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
