J.B. Flynn, age 92, loving father and husband, went to his eternal rest on Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home. He was born June 27 1922, in Maryville, TN. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army 40th Combat Engineers during WWII and received an Honorable Discharge in October 1945. During the war he kept a diary of his experiences and also wrote home to family friends of seeing St. Peter’s Basilica and the Catacombs in Rome, Italy. His attention to detail and vivid descriptions made the reader feel as if they were there too. Some of his letters were shared by the family and were published in the Maryville newspaper. J.B. worked at the Alcoa Aluminum Plant prior to accepting a position in the metallurgy division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) where he worked for 34 years before retiring in 1984. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Bert. and Nora Flynn, brothers Ray and Martin, sisters Opal, Verdie and Bonnie. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine Benelee Flynn, son Roger J. (Nicke) Flynn of Oak Ridge, TN, daughters Linda . (Joe) Byrd of Chattanooga, TN, and Becky . (Charles W. Jr.) Kilgore of McKinney, TX, granddaughters Robyn (Dr. Daniel) Logan, Heather (Stuart) Smith, grandson Charles (Trey) W. Kilgore III, 3 great-grandchildren, Emily, Jake, and Will Logan, and brother Bill, Martin and sister, Ruth. He dearly loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with them. J.B. will be greatly missed by family and friends who knew and loved him. The family thanks the staff at Ben Atchley for taking such excellent and tender care of J.B. and for their kindness and generous care of our family in this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home, Knoxville, TN, Honor Air Program, Knoxville, TN, or Wounded Warriors Program. Friends may call at their convenience 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for the entombment service.
