ONE KILLED IN COLLISION WITH AMBULANCE
KNOXVILLE -- The driver of a pickup was killed in a collision with an ambulance bound from Middlesboro, Ky., to the University of Tennessee Hospital.
Authorities said the ambulance from the Middlesboro Fire Department was southbound on Tenn. 33 in northern Knox County about 10:55 p.m. Friday when it hit the truck driven by Lyde Bales , 49.
Bales apparently turned in front of the ambulance, which flipped onto its side in the collision, authorities said. Bales died at University of Tennessee Hospital.
The ambulance was carrying two cardiac patients from Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital, two attendants and a nurse.
Ambulance driver Otto Gambrell and nurse Linda Douglas were taken to St. Mary's Medical Center with head injuries. Douglas was in intensive care yesterday, hospital spokeswoman Eileen Herbert said. Gambrell was discharged yesterday. The second attendant was treated and dismissed without being admitted.
The cardiac patients were taken to the University of Tennessee Hospital after the accident. One remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit yesterday, while the other was moved out of intensive care.
