OWNBY , HOWARD L. - went to be with our Heavenly Father Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 1:00 a.m. Mr. Ownby was a resident of South Knoxville for seventy years. He graduated from Farragut High School and East Tennessee State University. He served in the U. S. Army, during World War II. He was taken prisoner-of-war during the Battle of the Bulge. After returning to the U. S., he became involved in the commercial roofing business and became Vice-President of Tri-State Roofing Company, where he spent thirty years. He was also an active charter member of the Smoky Mountain Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War. Mr. Ownby was preceded in death by parents, Renna and Aaron Ownby sister, Evelyn Duncan brothers, Cecil, Webb, and Newton. He is survived by wife, Hazel Proffitt Ownby , whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage with on June 29th. Their love story lasted all sixty-two years. He is also survived by two sons and spouses, Steve and Sharon Ownby and Phillip and Cindy Ownby grandchildren: Brian, Robin, Andrea, Heather, Matthew and Lauren faithful brother, Ralph Ownby sisters, Sara Ownby , Doris Barbee, and Thelma Hodges. Mr. Ownby was a devout Christian and a member and deacon of Meridian Baptist Church for 43 years, having served in many offices. The family extends sincere thanks to Theresa Olmsted and other wonderful caregivers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Smoky Mountain Chapter of Ex-Prisoners of War, c/o Kyle Holbert, 3116 Cunningham Rd., Knoxville, TN 37918. Funeral service will be Monday at 8:00 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Dana Fachman officiating. Family and friends will meet at Highland Memorial Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday for interment services. East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. www.berryfuneralhome.com
