Martha "Mattie" Ownby, age 93 of Cosby went to be home with the Lord Saturday March 1, 2014.
Mattie was born in Greenbrier. She was a member of Pearl Valley Baptist Church and retired from Jones Cove Elementary School where she was a cook. Mattie loved gardening, sewing, and reading. She sewed quilts for the C.C.C. during the Depression. Mattie moved to Washington State with her beloved husband, Cletis, early in their marriage, where she worked at an apple orchard.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years Cletis O. Ownby; grandmother who raised her, Sarah Parton; parents, William and Anna Messer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John Walker and Printhia Ann Roberts Ownby; brothers-in-law, Conley Ownby, Herbert Ownby, John Walker and Irene Ownby; and sisters-in-law, Hettie and Alvin Rolen, Myrtle and Lem Howard, Deliah Ownby Rolen.
She is survived by her nephews and nieces Sara Mae Rolen, Mary Nell Lewelling, Joyce Helton, Brett Ownby, Johnnie McCarter, Wanda Watson, Helen Atchley, Dannie Henry, Marian Groover, Conley Ownby and Kenneth Ownby, and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews, and her best little furry friend, Bud.
Mattie was also preceded in death by Ralph and Claudine Roberts, who were very dear to her, and survived by their daughter, Angie Mathis and her husband Rodney.
The family will receive friends 10-11 AM Wednesday with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Tom McMahan and Rev. Lee Carr officiating.
