SCHULTZ, LaVERNE OWENBY - age 81 of Athens, died Thursday night at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Jenks, Oklahoma, she was a daughter of the late Virgil and Minnie Brown Owenby and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Schultz and a brother, Cecil Owenby and two sisters, Hazel Owenby and Charlotte Howerton. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught a Sunday school class for forty years and had served on the administrative board. She was a retired teacher having taught for forty years n the Athens City School System, at North City Elementary School. She was a member of the McMinn Retired Teachers Association and received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1976. Surviving are five sisters in law and two brothers in law, Sue and Tom Frye, Armeda and Ross Schultz , Thelma Owenby , all of Athens, Bertie Tolliver, Knoxville and Joyce Schultz , Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Don Morris officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service. Jerry Smith Funeral Home of Athens is serving the family of LaVerne Owenby Schultz.
