Jacob Reece " J . R ." Wattenbarger , 89, of Decatur, went to be with his Lord and Savior early Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at his home.
A native and lifelong resident of Meigs County, he was the eldest and last member of Buttram's Chapel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Wattenbarger and Myrtle Wilson Wattenbarger ; his stepmother, Ada Wattenbarger ; his first wife of 34 years, Louise Shultz Wattenbarger ; his second wife of 34 years, Beulah Mullins Wattenbarger ; one daughter, Margie Wattenbarger Davis; one stepdaughter, Louise Taylor; and stepsons, Lee Mullins and Paul Mullins. He was employed with TVA and was a member of IBEW for 59 years. He served in the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor from 1942-1945. He was a very loved man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Poppy and Jimmy Stiner of Ten Mile; two sons, Danny Wattenbarger and his special friend, Judy Gordon, and Stacy Wattenbarger and his wife, Carolyn, all of Decatur; one half-brother, Edison Wattenbarger of Texas; one stepsister, Francis Womac of Niota; three stepchildren and their spouses, Martha and Harold Edward Priest, Linda and Mike Ratledge and Randy and Brenda Mullins; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
We want to give a special thanks to Connie Rhodes and all of Avalon Hospice and Guardian Home Health along with all his caretakers.
Funeral services will be noon Saturday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ogle Wattenbarger and the Rev. Floyd Tharp officiating. Burial will follow in Buttram's Cemetery with full military honors.
Active Pallbearers will be Larry Davis Jr., Donald Lee Hyde, James Reese Wattenbarger , Michael Ball, Ritchie Lawson, Mark Kennedy and Ricky Gossett.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
