EDWARD HICKS LOY, age 89, of Jefferson City, TN passed away on August 30, 2009 at Jefferson County Nursing Home. He was born on the family farm in Loyston, TN on March 4, 1920. He attended Hills Academy to begin his formal education, and moved to New Market with his family in 1935 as a result of the construction of Norris Dam, whose backwaters would eventually inundate the family property, including the family general merchandise store. He finished high school at New Market, then completed the business requirements for graduation from Knoxville Business College. He then accepted a position at First National Bank/First American/Amsouth/currently Regions Bank in Jefferson City, where he spent his entire business career, retiring as Senior Vice President in 1983. Edward's work career was interrupted by World War II, where he served three years in the U.S. Army. He proudly served in England, North Africa, Italy and France, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. Edward was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City for over sixty years. Uncle Edward had a unique way of assuring each of his nieces, great-nieces, great-great nieces, nephews, and great nephews that each one was his favorite; and they WERE. He loved each and every one equally and dearly. His love of gardening was his passion, and many of his stunning plantings have brought sheer joy to numerous friends, neighbors and strangers. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Ada Maude Oakes Loy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ruble K. and Mayme Turner Loy, Fred D. and Aileen Woolsey Loy; and brother, Emert R. Loy. He is survived by sister-in-law, Mrs. Emert R. (Ruth Walters) Loy; nieces, Myrna Greene of Knoxville, Carolyn Davis of Jacksonville, FL, Marilyn Morgan of Knoxville and Sue Ann Dobbyn of Knoxville; nephews, Harold Loy and Robert Loy, both of Knoxville, James Loy of Rhode Island, Stephen Loy of Nashville and John Loy of California. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City. Graveside funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at New Market Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Loy officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 2011 Branner Avenue, Jefferson City, TN 37760. Arrangements by Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City, TN (865) 475-3892
