Community leaders are mourning the death of Larry Huskey, an educator, administrator and state representative who always kept the interests of Sevier County at heart.
Huskey, 58, died of cancer early Wednesday morning at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
Since 1998, he was part-time town administrator for Pittman Center, the community in which he grew up. Before that he was a teacher, long-time principal and administrator in Sevier County School System, and served as a state representative for 18 years.
"He was not only a good friend, he was a very effective legislator who did a lot for Sevier County and its citizens," said County Executive Larry Waters. His outgoing, friendly nature meant that "people just liked him," Waters said.
"He was well liked and real pleasant," said Pittman Center Mayor Glenn Cardwell. "He had a very pleasing personality - the type of person you felt good to be around and count him as a friend.
"He came from a fine family," Cardwell said. His parents were Cora Huskey, a teacher, and the late Conley Huskey, who became Pittman Center's first mayor. They represented two major career influences on his life - education and politics, Cardwell said.
He attended Pittman Center School and earned his B.S. degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 1966.
He taught for two years at Alpha Elementary in Hamblen County then in 1968 taught eighth grade at Pigeon Forge Elementary. The next year, he became principal of Seymour High School, a position he held until 1988.
He continued his own education by earning an M.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1970 and an E.D.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1992.
In 1980 he was elected as a state representative to the Tennessee General Assembly, coordinating its midweek sessions each spring with his job of principal.
"He did an absolutely terrific job for all of us," said Pigeon Forge City Manager Earlene Teaster. "He was so easy to work with on both sides of the aisle, both Republican and Democrat. He represented everybody."
"He was a tremendous friend to Gatlinburg and this whole county," said Cindy Ogle, Gatlinburg's city manager. She told her staff Wednesday morning how much Huskey had done, including shepherding premier resort status legislation through the House for Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
His outgoing personality and easy friendliness gave him some clout in Nashville. He knew how to get things done, and who to call to move things along. He served on the power Finance, Ways & Means Committee and the State & Local Government Committee.
He is also remembered for personal acts of kindness. County Commissioner Riley King recalled how Huskey raised about $7,500 so a boy with cancer could get an operation. "He's in his 30s now," King said.
Huskey "has done so many good things for this county that people have forgotten about."
In 1988, newly elected Superintendent of Schools Jack Parton moved Huskey from Seymour High to the central school office, where he became director of personnel for the whole school system.
"Larry Huskey was a wonderful person to work with," said Debra Cline, director of curriculum and instruction for the school system. "I've seen him many times extend the hand of kindness and generosity toward other people."
She said he was interested in athletics and reading and was an avid follower of government and politics. "He had a tremendous sense of humor," she said.
Parton said Huskey "was recognized as a friend of Sevier County across the state of Tennessee. He was proud of Sevier County. He loved Sevier County."
Huskey was named Sevier County Tourism Leader of the Year in 1992.
Over the years, redistricting changed the boundaries of Huskey's constituency. He represented part of Blount and Jefferson counties for a while, Waters said.
He was easy to work with, said Richard Montgomery, who was the Seymour member of Sevier County Board of Education for many years.
Huskey left the school system in 1997. The following year, Montgomery narrowly defeated him in the August Republican primary.
Meanwhile, Pittman Center was looking for a city administrator. "His availability to us was a godsend," Cardwell said. Huskey lived in town with his mother and still had good contacts in county and state government.
He had already helped his home town in the legislature. As town administrator, he knew how to get things done and did a good job, said Pittman Center Alderman G Webb.
"He was always so jovial and seemed happy to be alive. That's what so heartbreaking," Webb said.
"I was looking forward to him growing old there."
Huskey was a member of Burnett Memorial United Methodist Church in Pittman Center. He leaves a son, Tyler, who is a Knoxville attorney, and his mother.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rawlings Funeral Home in Sevierville, with the funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Emerts Cove Cemetery in Pittman Center.
