Born June 9, 1851, Gilbert Russell “Gib” McMahan was a direct descendent of Archibald McMahan II and Elizabeth Byrd McMahan, who settled on a land grant in Pearl Valley in 1811. His paternal grandparents, David Crockett McMahan and Sarah Large McMahan purchased and lived on the farm homesteaded by William Richardson, the man for whom Richardson’s Cove was named and whose family had been massacred by the Indians there in 1792. Gilbert was a son of Archibald D. McMahan (1817-1883) and Rebecca F.McMahan (1824-1871). His siblings were: Frances Marion McMahan, Fannie McMahan, Nancy McMahan, Elender (Manis), Angeleta (Townsend), Blackburn McMahan, Laura McMahan and Martha (Watson).
Gilbert married Mary M. Townsend (born September 15, 1848) on February 3, 1867. Gilbert and Mary were parents of three children: John W. “Squire” McMahan (1867-October 15, 1937, married Sallie Belle and Eliza Belle McMahan), Sarah “Pud” McMahan (June 16, 1876 – August 11, 1938) and Nannie (April 4, 1877 – May 5, 1955, married Andy Manis). Mary Townsend McMahan died March 22, 1889. She was 41.
Gilbert’s was married a second time to Martha Elizabeth “Eliza” Manis (born October 16, 1867) daughter of James R. and Eliza Sutton Manis on December 31, 1889. Gilbert and Eliza were parents of: James Wilson De Arnold “Tubby” (February 25, 1893-July 18, 1963, married Stella Howard), Henry Russell (November 18, 1894 – killed in action in WWI on September 29, 1918), Elzora (February 15, 1898-April 23, 1906), Dallas Redmond “Rass”McMahan (March 28, 1898 – March 6, 1960, married Viola Atchley and Gladys Carr), George McKinley McMahan ( May 11, 1900 – February 23, 1965, married Nancy King) Melinda L. (May 24, 1903-December 1, 1968, married Manson Bohannon), Earl Winfred “Jack”(July 31, 1904-July 23, 1990, married Nummie McCarter and Lydia Knight Ogle) and Nancy Jane (November 6, 1908 –April 22, 1986, married Robert King). Eliza Manis McMahan died January 23, 1920 and was buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery.
Among his earlier occupations, Gilbert assisted his father, a skilled wagon craftsman, and did an apprenticeship as a blacksmith for his Uncle McNulty McMahan. Farming became his chosen vocation. He raised corn to grind in the T.W.D. McMahan Mill operated by his cousin on the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River and sold produce to another cousin, Robert McMahan, to sell in his community store.
Gilbert attended the Richardson’s Cove Baptist Church until the church dissolved due the fear of assembling during the Civil War. When the Church of Christ at Pleasant Hill was established on May 24, 1871, Gilbert, his first wife, Mary, and his parents were charter members. A year later the church was renamed Shady Grove Baptist Church. Gilbert remained a member and eventually became a Deacon of Shady Grove Baptist Church until Richardson’s Cove Baptist Church was re-established in 1914 and he transferred membership back to the church of his youth.
At the ripe old age of 87, Gilbert McMahan died on October 28, 1938 at his home in Richardson’s Cove and was buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery.
